General introduction
Maine is the northeasternmost state in Lower 48 of the United States. Maine is the 12th smallest state by area, ninth least populated, and 13th least densely populated of the 50 states in the United States. These are in New England, bordering New Hampshire to the west, the Atlantic to the southeast, and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec to the northeast and northwest respectively. Maine is the only state to have a border with another state, the easternmost of the contiguous regions of the United States, and the northeasternmost state of the Great Lakes.
History
Maine The Algonquian-speaking Wabanaki peoples are the original inhabitants of present-day Maine. About 200 years before the arrival of the Europeans, the Norwegians discovered the Americas but did not permanently settle. The French explorer Pierre Dugua was a European who landed in 1604. The first British settlement was made in 1607 by the Plymouth Company. According to the 1622 land patent, the area was later called the Province of Maine. In the years that followed, a series of wars between France and its Indian allies ensued. In the 1740s, the French were defeated at the hands of the British at Acadia. When the United States was established, the Maine territory was identified as part of Massachusetts. Under the 1820 Missouri Compromise, Congress established Maine as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820. Today it is well known for its agricultural products, dairy products, and commercial fishing.
