Introduce

Wisconsin is a state in the north-central, Midwest and Great Lakes region of the country. It is bordered by Minnesota to the west, Iowa to the southwest, Illinois to the south, Lake Michigan to the east, Michigan to the northeast, and Lake Superior to the north. Wisconsin is the 23rd largest state by total area and 20th most populous state. The state capital is Madison, and its largest city is Milwaukee, located on the west bank of Lake Michigan. The state is divided into 72 counties.

Geographical location

Wisconsin is very diverse, having been greatly affected by glaciers during the Ice Age, with the exception of the Zero Drift Area. The North Central Highlands and Western Uplands together with part of the Central Plain occupy the western part of the state, with the lowlands extending to the shores of Lake Michigan. Wisconsin ranks third after Ontario and Michigan in terms of the length of the Great Lakes coastline.
The state of Wisconsin is divided into five geographic regions; Lake Superior Lowlands, Northern Highlands, Eastern Lowlands and Mountains, Central Plains and Western Highlands. It is famous for many geographical features such as lakes, forests, mountains and rivers. The state's highest point is Timms Hill, at 1,951 feet above sea level and located in the Northern Highlands. The lowest point is Lake Michigan at 581 feet above sea level. The Northern Plateau also consists of coniferous and hardwood forests and numerous large glacial lakes. Unique sandstone formations together with lush agricultural land form the core attraction of the Central Delta. The Eastern Mountains and Lowlands are home to the Niagara Cliffs, Magnesian Cliffs and Black River Cliffs and some of Wisconsin's top cities. The highlands in the west are a mix of forest and agricultural land. While the main rivers of the state are the Wisconsin, Mississippi and St. Croix, the main lakes are Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and Lake Winnebago. The highest recorded temperature in the state was 114 degrees Fahrenheit on July 13, 1936 in Wisconsin Dells. The lowest recorded temperature was –55 degrees F in the village of Couderay.

Wisconsin is one of the nation's top dairy producers and is dubbed the "Land of American Milk"; it is especially famous for its cheese. Manufacturing (especially paper products), information technology, cranberry, ginseng, and tourism are also major contributors to the state's economy.
